Reef
Merville Patches is a shallow, colourful reef system located just off the coast of Grand Baie, known for its bright coral blocks, sandy corridors, and consistently calm conditions. It’s one of the most accessible sites in the north, offering warm, clear water and gentle topography ideal for relaxed exploration.
With depths generally ranging from 8 to 15 m, the site is perfectly suited for beginners, training dives, and photographers looking for long bottom times and stable light. Its sheltered position makes it a reliable option even when other northern sites are exposed to wind or swell.

A Bright, Shallow Reef Full of Colour
Merville Patches is built around a series of scattered coral bommies resting on a sandy plateau, creating a mosaic of miniature ecosystems. The reef blocks are home to vibrant soft corals, anemones, and small schools of reef fish that weave between the structures. The shallow depth allows sunlight to flood the site, enhancing colours and making it a favourite for underwater photography.
Ideal Conditions for Training and Relaxed Diving
The site’s gentle profile and minimal current make it one of the most forgiving dive environments in the north. It is frequently used for Open Water courses, refreshers, and buoyancy practice, yet still offers enough variety to keep more experienced divers engaged. Visibility is typically excellent, and the sandy patches provide safe areas for skills or controlled descents.
Marine Life Highlights
Merville Patches hosts a lively mix of small reef species, including butterflyfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, and juvenile wrasses. Macro enthusiasts can find nudibranchs, leaf scorpionfish, and cleaner shrimps tucked into the coral heads. Stingrays occasionally rest on the sand, and the bommies attract curious octopus and small moray eels.
