Reef
Black Forest (Forêt Noire) is one of the signature reef dives of the northern coast of Mauritius, located off Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin). The site is named for its dense, dark coral formations that resemble a submerged forest when viewed from above.
With depths ranging from 18 to 30 m, Black Forest offers an atmospheric dive with excellent visibility, vibrant marine life and a dramatic sloping reef. It is best suited to intermediate and advanced divers who enjoy deeper reef profiles and open blue water.

A Reef That Looks Like a Submerged Forest
The site is characterised by dense coral growth, including large patches of dark-toned coral that give the reef its name. These formations create a textured, layered landscape that feels like swimming over a forest canopy.
A Deeper, Atmospheric Profile
Black Forest slopes from mid-depth into the deeper blue, offering a depth range of 18 to 30 m. The deeper sections provide soft light and a sense of scale, while the mid-depth areas allow for slower exploration and photography.
Marine Life on the Reef
The site hosts a lively mix of tropical species. Snappers, fusiliers and goatfish move in schools along the slope, while scorpionfish, lionfish and moray eels hide among the coral. Eagle rays and trevallies occasionally pass through the deeper blue.
Clear Water and Strong Visual Appeal
The visibility typical of the northern coast highlights the reef’s structure and colours. The contrast between dark coral patches, sandy channels and open water makes Black Forest a favourite for underwater photographers.
A Classic Northern Reef Dive
Black Forest offers a memorable combination of depth, structure and marine life. Its unique coral formations and clear water make it one of the most iconic reef dives near Coin de Mire.
