Wreck
The Star Hope Wreck offers one of Mauritius' most captivating deep diving experiences, where history meets marine conservation in spectacular fashion. This 50-meter Japanese trawler, deliberately sunk in 1996 to create an artificial reef, rests majestically at 36 meters depth off the pristine north coast of Mauritius.
What makes this dive truly extraordinary is the thriving ecosystem that has flourished around the wreck over nearly three decades. The Star Hope has become a sanctuary for Javanese moray eels, creating one of the most reliable encounters with these fascinating creatures in Mauritian waters, while graceful sea turtles glide through the crystal-clear waters above.

The Wreck Experience
The Star Hope sits upright on the sandy seabed in remarkable condition, offering advanced divers the opportunity to explore both the exterior structure and, for qualified wreck divers, carefully penetrate certain sections of the vessel. The trawler's impressive 50-meter length provides ample exploration opportunities, with marine life having colonized every surface over the years.
Marine Life Encounters
Beyond the famous Javanese moray eels that have made the wreck their home, divers regularly encounter a diverse array of tropical species. Schools of colorful reef fish dart between the coral-encrusted superstructure, while larger pelagic species occasionally visit from the deeper waters. The artificial reef has successfully attracted both resident and transient marine life, creating a dynamic underwater ecosystem.
Historical Context
The Star Hope represents Mauritius' commitment to marine conservation through artificial reef programs. Nearby, divers can also observe three additional anchors and a remarkable 17th-century sheet anchor, adding historical depth to the diving experience. This combination of modern conservation efforts and maritime heritage creates a unique underwater museum.
Diving Conditions
Located in the protected waters off Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie, the Star Hope benefits from generally excellent diving conditions. The 36-meter depth requires advanced certification and experience, but rewards qualified divers with exceptional visibility and the opportunity to explore one of the Indian Ocean's most successful artificial reefs. The moderate currents and good visibility make this an ideal advanced wreck diving destination.
